MEXICO CITY - Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Tuesday denounced the murder of the newly elected major Gregorio Barradas Mirabetea.
Barradas was a member of the ruling National Action Party (PAN) who was elected mayor of Juan Rodriguez Clara, a small town in Gulf state Veracruz.
Barradas' body was found alongside those of Omar Manzur, the deputy mayor, and their colleague Angel Landa Cardenas Monday in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca bordering Veracruz.
Mexico has seen at least 13 public officials murdered this year. The most recent murder of a mayor was on November 6 in San Bernardo, a town in the northern Mexican state of Durango. The killing of Rodolfo Torre Cantu was probably the highest profile. Before his death Cantu was leading the gubernatorial race in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas in June.
