The presidential, adopted by consensus, said that the Security Council "deplores the loss of life and injuries and expresses its deep sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families and to the people and government of the ROK."

On March 26, the ROK Cheonan, with 104 crew members aboard, sank off the ROK west coast island of Baekryeong due to an unexplained explosion, killing 46 South Korean sailors.

The presidential statement mentioned the findings of the investigation conducted by the ROK and also took note of the response from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), "which has stated that it had nothing to do with the incident."
