Earlier on the same day in a live televised address to the nation, he announced his resignation.

In his address, M.K. Nepal said that his resignation will further pave the way for national government which will escort Nepal's peace process to logical conclusion.

M. K. Nepal was elected in the post on May 23, 2009 after the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Chairman Prachanda resigned on May 4 following a row over sacking of the then Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal.

After his resignation, the incumbent government will remain care taker government unless national government to be formed with national consensus.
