WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama offered condolences on Tuesday to the families of workers killed in an explosion at a Massey Energy coal mine and said the government is prepared to help.

"The federal government stands ready to offer whatever assistance is needed in this rescue effort," Obama said at a White House prayer breakfast.

At least 25 miners were killed in the deadliest US mining disaster since 1984.
