A U.S. soldier was killed Sunday after coming under small-arms fire northeast of Baghdad, the military said, raising the monthly American death toll to 37.

The Task Force Lightning forces were conducting combat operations in Diyala province when insurgents attacked. The soldier was shot and later died of the wounds, the military said in a statement.

The soldier's name was not released pending notification of relatives.

The death raises to at least 3,121 members of the U.S. military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. Thirty-seven U.S. troops have died so far this month
