China's Zhou Yong continued his charge on Monday in the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally, a 508km special on a 776km run through the Atacama desert from Antofagasta to Copiapo in Chile on Monday.

Zhou Yong finished 16th in eight hours, 36 minutes and one second and moved up two places in the overall standings, from 19th to 17th. It is so far the best-ever Dakar performance by a Chinese driver. The previous one was 19th by late Xu Lang in 2006.

But prospects are not looking good for Rely-Double Star Team's two drivers - Jiang Yaohuan, who finished 29th overall last year and debutante Liu Kun, both at the wheels of China-made Chery Rely X5. Till 9pm local time, stage results of the two drivers were still not available on the official website of the Dakar Rally (www.dakar.com/index), meaning they had not reached the stage's final check point.

The other Chinese driver, Zhou Yuande, also had not arrived home by that time.

In motorcycling, Su Wenmin was 65th in the stage and remains 75th overall.

Motorcyclist Han Baohua and truck driver Li Yang still had not arrived at the camp by midnight (local time).
