Rossi takes pole position in China Grand Prix

SHANGHAI -- World champion Valentino Rossi took pole position in the Grand Prix of China on Saturday with a lap of one minutes 58.424 seconds on his Yamaha.

It was the Italian's 48th career pole.

American John Hopkins on a Suzuki finished second, just 0.891 seconds off the pace, while fellow countryman and Rossi teammate Colin Edwards came third.

Australian Casey Stoner was fourth and last year's winner Honda rider Dani Pedrosa got fifth.
