Jeff Gordon won the Aaron's 499 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway under caution on Sunday to move past Dale Earnhardt on NASCAR's all-time victory list.

Gordon passed Jamie McMurray for the lead just before a caution came out on lap 186, and was still ahead at the restart with just three laps to go.

A wreck behind the leaders on turn two of the opening lap of the restart brought the caution out again, effectively ending the race.

Gordon's 77th career victory was achieved on what would have been the late Earnhardt's 56th birthday. Many fans tossed garbage on to the 2.66-mile track after the race.

"I've never caused a riot before by winning," Gordon said in the victory lane after moving into sixth place on Nascar's win list. "Well maybe once or twice. There were a lot of people out there who didn't want to see us win."

Jimmie Johnson finished second, followed by Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick and McMurray
