Ukraine's Ivanchuck keeps lead in Cuban chess competition

Vassily Ivanchuk, the Ukrainian chess grandmaster, with four points, remains the leader on Monday in the Capablanca Memorial International Chess Competition in Cuban capital Havana.

Ivanchuk will faces Cuba's Jesus Nogueiras in the competition's seventh round.

Ivanchuck, who has an Elo coefficient of 2,741, agreed draw with Cuba's Lazaro Bruzon, who has an Elo coefficient of 2,648, on Sunday. Ivanchuck had beaten Bruzon in the first round of the competition.

Nogueiras, with an Elo of 2,554, comes from a defeat at the hands of Russia's Evgueny Bareev, 24th in the world with an Elo of 2,683, after 69 moves with the Slav Defense.

Also on Monday, Poland's Kamil Miton, with an Elo of 2,638, who is in second place with 3.5 pionts, will meet Bruzon who has only 2.5 and shares last place with Nogueiras and Bareev.

Bareev is due to face Leinier Domnguez, who has an Elo of 2, 655 and has three points after six games. The players are playing a two-round system where each player is matched against every other player.

In the open competition, where 50 players play using the Swiss system, the two leaders grandmaster Juan Borges and international master Aryam Abreu are due to play. The tournament ends on Thursday.
