Pudong airport takes efforts to promote catering services

Passengers at Pudong International Airport (PVG) can be certain they are enjoying safe and clean food as authorities begin to regulate restaurants settled there.

The airport inaugurated the "Demonstrate Street of Food Safety" on July 11 as a major initiative to improve catering services and provide safe food for passengers. A thematic activity featuring food security was also held on the day where knowledge on food safety was available to passengers. The initiative is a collaboration between PVG and food regulatory authorities to strengthen food regulation.

PVG is a transport hub integrating the functions of aviation, railway, bus and long-distance passenger transport. With the increasing number of passengers, it is also a super commercial complex. The passenger throughput of the airport exceeded 66 million in 2016, ranking ninth in the world.

Establish comprehensive control mechanism

To ensure food security, it is PVG's priority to deal with catering services. To achieve this goal, the airport has put in place a strict supervision mechanism to monitor the sources of raw materials purchased, food processing, cooking and storage, as well as tableware cleaning and sterilizing.

Commercial tenants settled at the airport are required to sign safety responsibility agreements and all the catering staff must take appointment with proper qualification and certificates. The airport has also set up a supervisory mechanism through cooperation with government departments of industry and commerce, inspection and quarantine, and authorities at the terminal building.

Build transparent kitchen

To implement the newly-released Food Safety Regulation of Shanghai and build a safe catering environment, PVG joined the "transparent kitchen" project initiated by Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. Some chain restaurants operating at the airport have installed "video kitchen" through which customers can see how food is prepared in the kitchen. More catering tenants will be included in the project- a form of supervision by customers, and guarantee food safety.

Introduce more chain brands

In recent years, PVG has been trying to promoting catering services by improving price transparency and enriching food tastes. Its catering shops cover a wide range of brands such as McDonald and KFC, and popular coffee chains, such as Costa and Starbucks. There are also restaurants including the Hong Kong-style Tai Hing and Cuihua, and Muslim restaurant Huixiang Maike. Business travellers can find the high-end Cafe Deco and Hope Kaweh at the airport. The airport wants to improve passengers’ dining experiences through standardized regulations on chain restaurants.

The airport will also hold a series of food culture activities under the theme "A Bite of Pudong International Airport" to promote its catering service and showcase its diverse food culture to passengers. The activities are expected to impress passengers with the integration of traditional Chinese food culture and the Shanghai-style culture.

Pudong International Airport hopes all the passengers would enjoy world-class services during their trips.
