The opening ceremony for the 2015 International Academic Seminar on Eucalyptus was held in Zhanjiang, South China's Guangdong province, on Oct 21.

More than 380 experts and scholars from 23 countries around the world attended the seminar and had in-depth discussion on sustainable development of eucalyptus industry.

Seven people were presented the "2015 Outstanding Contribution Award for China's Eucalyptus Development" during the seminar that will last until Oct 24.

Zhanjiang Mayor Wang Zhongbing welcomed the Chinese and foreign guests at the seminar. He gave a speech, in which he provided detailed information about Zhanjiang and its eucalyptus industry.

Wang said that Zhanjiang is the largest eucalyptus high-yielding plantation and seedling production base in China. In recent years, Zhanjiang has built the biggest and the most advanced forestry-pulp-paper integration production base.

Wang also pointed to the importance of promoting sustainable development of eucalyptus industry, stating that the use of eucalyptus to improve the ecological environment of the Leizhou Peninsula is an area that Zhanjiang currently focuses on.

The mayor hoped that experts could provide useful advice for Zhanjiang and popularize the knowledge about eucalyptus.

The seminar, held in China for the first time, was sponsored by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, organized by the Chinese Society of Forestry and Chinese Academy of Forestry and supported by the Zhanjiang municipal government.
