Three famous Chinese "herbal shampoo" brands, including one promoted by Jackie Chan, have been found to contain carcinogenic chemicals. Strict rules should be implemented to ensure popular public figures don't promote products without verifying its effects on humans, says an article on xinhuanet.com. Excerpts:

The news of three famous "herbal shampoo" brands containing cancer-causing chemicals has shocked consumers and the celebrities promoting them. Ironically, one of the three shampoo-makers, Bawang, responded to the findings, saying the use of such chemicals in the products is nothing new and since its shampoo contains only a small amount of the chemicals it won't harm users. One cannot help but ask Bawang why shampoo makers kept the use of such chemicals secret if they were using them in too small a quantity to cause cancer. It is shame that government supervisors couldn't uncover the truth before.Punitive measures should be taken against celebrities who promote products without knowing whether they could harm consumers.
