Japan's image improves

Only when we understand that Chinese have two Japans in their hearts can we have a complete and objective grasp of the image of Japan in Chinese minds, says an article in a Japanese newspaper. The following is an excerpt:

Japanese elements in Chinese films have long been the focus of the media in both China and Japan. And this year many Chinese blockbusters contain many Japan elements.

The three films -If You Are The One, Forever Enthralled, and Ip Man - are all commercial films, seeking big box office successes. They reflect the current image of Japan in the eyes of Chinese, which can be broken down into two types: one is the brutal Japan that invaded China; the other is the attractive nation with its beautiful scenic views and advanced economy.

Most Chinese find it hard to forget the traumatic past; yet simultaneously appreciate today's Japan for its sophisticated products, beautiful environment, advanced economy and courteous citizens.

In the past, China's films and television dramas dwelled more on the brutal Japan than the beautiful one. In recent years, they have begun to cast their eyes more on today's Japan, such as Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles, and some Japanese entertainment celebrities have also become popular in China.

Both changes are delightful.
