Problem at universities(China Daily)
Updated: 2008-01-07 07:06 The fact that college students are becoming the main group of online game-players provides much food for thought, says an article in Sanqin Metropolis Daily. The following is an excerpt: A survey of universities in Guangzhou shows more and more college students are playing online games, affecting their studies and health. Several companies believe that college students make up the backbone of online-game players. Thus we can see universities have an online games problem. In a diverse society, people should not criticize others for playing online games. What is worrying is that college students do not have sufficient collective activities with the gradual demise of various student organizations. Years ago, students organized book clubs, seminars, and debates to keep up with events of the day, today that is no longer the case. Eating and drinking is more popular than the recitation of poems, speeches and talent shows. What kind of campus culture should our universities cultivate to guide students? If students were given more interesting activities they would not resort to online games which affect their studies and health. Guidance is more effective than simple prohibition. If we want to guide our students, our universities should pay more attention to their cultural construction instead of building more and more halls. (China Daily 01/07/2008 page4) |
