Lugu Lake, a magical and beautiful place, is settled by the Mosuo people, who have long maintained the time-honored matriarchal practice of "walking marriages" in which "men and women do not marry each other, though they may cohabitate together of their own will and separate freely".
If a man and a woman are in love and agree to live together, the man is allowed to walk into the woman’s room at night and spend the whole night there occasionally, but he has to go back to his home in the morning. Neither becomes a member of the other's family. Their children live and grow up at the mother's and stay with the mother's family. Women are the master of the family. The "Assia marriage" that demands men "walk away' is unique among all kinds of marital relationships around the world. Lugu Lake is the only country of daughters in the world.
With such a unique marriage and belief system, Lugu Lake is known as "the last paradise reserved by god for women," "the world's only matriarchy", and "a living fossil of the early forms of human society".
Lugu Lake is not only a country of daughters, but a kingdom of songs and dances. After dinner, Mosuo people often hold a bonfire party. Many young Mosuo men and women perform by the bonfire, and all tourists are invited to make two big circles to dance to the rhythm. People cheer, and it's quite bustling and interesting. At midnight, people go their different ways under the starry sky back to Mosuo folk houses.
The culture of the Mosuo people is a part of Daba culture. Most of the Mosuo people believe in Tibetan Buddhism. Mosuo people have their own mother tongue, the Mosuo language, but do not have corresponding historical text. Everything here is so ancient, mysterious and poetic, with ethereal calm that washes the dust and pacifies a person's inner world.
