The city of Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, held an opening ceremony for the International Children's Skiing Festival in its Silk Road International Skiing Park, on Jan 18, with more than 600 children playing football, making tug of war and doing body building exercises on the snow.

Yang Xinzhao, vice-head of the region’s Sports Administration, addressed the ceremony saying: "We are hoping that the festival can get young people more interested in sports on snow and enrich their school life, improving their body constitution and strengthening their will power." He also hoped the festival could stimulate the youths’ interests into becoming professional athletes.

The annual festival, honored as the Children’s Day in Ice and Snow World, is designed for children and held in January in several dozen countries.

The ceremony’s sponsors were China’s General Administration of Sport and the region’s Sports Bureau. Also attending the ceremony were vice-mayor, Zhang Aihua, and Liu Yiyong, head of the region’s Sports Bureau.
