Oil production in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, one of the largest oil producers in the nation, hit a record high in 2013, according to new data released recently.

The Junggar Basin produced 11.6 million tons of oil in 2013. Shale gas output reached 3.05 billion cubic meters.

The local government has put considerable effort into increasing the region’s oil production. A total of 1.3 billion yuan ($214 million) has been injected into developing new oil extraction technologies, and a China Petroleum Xinjiang Data Center has been set up in 2013.

Xinjiang is well-known for its abundant oil reserves and is China's largest natural gas producer. The oil and petrochemical sector accounts for 60 percent of the local economy.
