BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhuanet) -- China has formally established a new county-level city in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

This newest addition, Khorgas, is near the border with Kazakhstan. Around 85,000 people live there. And lying on the Silk Road, Khorgas plays a strategic role in China’s link to Central Asia, as the region borders five central Asian countries. One of the joint projects between China and Turkmenistan, the Central Asia gas pipeline, ends here. Local authorities think Khorgas’ new city status would boost its development and China’s opening to the west.
