Urumqi industrial zone aims for a moderately prosperous society

Series reports on Urumqi State High-tech Industrial Zone

There was an Urumqi High-tech Industrial Zone Party committee regional conference for Xinjiang, on Jan 15, on developing a more prosperous society and setting goals for the zone, with Qiu Shuhua, Party secretary, saying that work on industrialization, a modern service industry, urban-rural integration, and innovation needs to be speeded up and that improving people's lives with a stable society need to accompany economic growth.

As a consequence, an Urumqi High-tech Investment and Development Group was set up in the zone with national funding, on April 28 and work of a road network in the north of Urumqi began on April 30.

In the meantime, work on a biomedicine enterprise incubator, Xinjiang's largest, began and it went into operation in the zone, on May 18. From the 24th to the 27th of that month, the zone sent a delegation to the 11th China Commodity Fair in Kazakhstan as clear evidence of its confidence in outside chances for its high-tech industries.

In the first half of 2013, the zone had a GDP of 3.2 billion yuan ($522.88 million), for a year-on-year increase of 11.9 percent or 39 percent of its yearly target, and an industrial added value output of 14.3 billion yuan, or 41.5 percent of this year’s target. It has also done 8.1 billion yuan in the retail business, for 39.5 percent of its 2013 plan, and 6.67 billion yuan in fixed assets investment, or 25.1 percent of yearly plan.

It now expects to have a GDP of 141.5 billion yuan ($23.12 billion) by 2015, for a year-on-year increase of 24.8 percent, and an industrial added value output of 51.5 billion yuan, a growth of 17.5 percent, as well as revenues of 7.1 billion yuan, up 24.3 percent, fixed assets investment of 38.3 billion yuan, 29 percent, retail sales of 32.2 billion yuan, 22.5 percent, and foreign trade worth $1.9 billion, up 20 percent.
