High-tech zone moves forward

Since their establishment, the Urumqi State High-tech Industrial Zone have worked to reform themselves and boost their economy and, in 2012, had a GPD of 68.65 billion yuan ($11.22 billion), industrial added value output of 33 billion yuan, investment of 22 billion yuan, total retail sales of 16.93 billion yuan, and foreign trade worth $2.22 billion. They also had revenues of 5.12 billion yuan and public budget revenues of 4.63 billion yuan, with the GDP accounting for a third of Urumqi's total and revenues and public budget revenues ranking top in the city. At the same time, investment and foreign trade were twice the two districts'amount before incorporation in 2010. It now intends to become a scientific-technological area with strong industries and business and a good environment, as well as the city's first high-tech district with a GDP above 100 billion yuan and revenues of 10 billion yuan, according to Qiu Shuhua, the district’s Party secretary.
The zone is also watching its economy by adjusting its thinking about industrial development and trying to introduce mid-sized to large projects in keeping with its industrial orientation and developing such areas as new energy, new materials, equipment manufacturing, the coal-electricity and coal-chemical industry, and modern services.
Meanwhile people's livelihood and social development are priority items in spit of the rapid development and, around 4.12 billion yuan was spent on livelihood and social undertakings, with nearly 1.8 billion for the urban area and industrial park construction to improve the functions and appearance of the area. The High-tech zone has held a high-tech product and park exhibition alongside the China-Eurasia Expo and has put every effort into turning Urumqi into a national garden city. Its green area covers 1380.78 hectares and it has 53 roadside green spaces, parks, and water areas, making it a demonstration site. The district also began developing its road network from April 30, of this year, according to Zhu Hailun, the Urumqi Party secretary.
