Educators gather in Karamay for national meeting

A national conference was held in Karamay from June 18-19, where some 1,500 teachers and scholars from across the country gathered to discuss improvements in the education system, as well as give recognition for teaching achievements over the past year.

Topics covered during the two-day meeting included education reform and education quality, with many participants, from presidents to students, sharing their experiences.

Key attendees included Zhong Binglin, chairman of the Chinese Education Society and Hu Junhai, the vice director of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region Education Bureau. Chen Xinfa, Party chief for Karamay delivered a speech at the opening ceremony.

This year’s event also featured on digitized information technology and was paperless with materials being available via a WeChat group. The participants needed only to scan a QR code to take part.

Peng Jianwei, the head of the Karamay education bureau, said that the city is focusing on education innovation by encouraging students to take greater initiative and play a core role in the development process.

He added that 11 schools in Karamay have followed the example of Beijing’s National Day School, which allows students to choose classes based on their capability and the difficulty level of the course. The innovative teaching method also enables students of various ethnic groups to make friends and communicate with each other. Karamay No. 1 Middle School is a particular school that is piloting the scheme.

The events were jointly hosted by the Chinese Education Society, as well as Karamay’s disctrict and city governments and education bureau.
