Karamay Municipal Library

Karamay Municipal Library was built in December 1989 and opened to the public in 1990. In the past two decades, the library has won several honorary titles such as “state first-class library” and “best library in Xinjiang”.

Construction of the new building of Karamay Municipal Library began in October 2010 and completed in April 2014. The new building is 30.8 meters high and covers a floor area of 26,000 square meters.

It features hollowed-out skylights and multiple-model lighting to form bright spaces for reading and studying.

The library holds more than 1.2 million volumes, including a large collection of Uygur-language books. It houses 16 different functional reading rooms, capable of accommodating 2,000 readers.

The new building is fully covered by a wireless network and employs a cutting-edge 3D library inquiry system.

The books in the municipal library can be accessed in 20 other libraries in Karamay via a digital sharing platform, which can share up to 2.23 million volumes.
