A Sino-South Korea baseball cultural communication event commenced in Shenyang, Liaoning province on July 18, in an attempt to strengthen local teenagers’ baseball abilities and promote the baseball sport and culture in Shenyang.
The education bureau of Shenyang’s Shenhe district signed a cooperation agreement with a company on developing baseball and its culture on the same day, with the hope of promoting the baseball spirit of team-working, tenacity and persistence among teenagers and fostering professional baseball players.
With Liaoning’s late start in baseball industry, Shenyang seldom had baseball in the past. But it is imperative to keep pace with the world on developing the sport of baseball and its culture. China is also speeding up the growth of emerging industries and implementing the strategy of national fitness.
In June 2019, 10 teenage baseball fans from Shenyang visited South Korea for baseball cultural communication, during which they experienced South Korea’s baseball culture and received professional coaching.
Shenyang plans to open baseball classes in schools and employ foreign coaches to enhance baseball’s popularity around the city.
Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the world with the games attracting over 2 billion audiences annually. Baseball primarily developed in the US, while it is also popular in Japan and South Korea. It has become the national sport of South Korea. Baseball came to China in 1980s, less popular than that in other countries and regions due to cultural and historical reasons.
