Foguang Temple

This temple on Mount Wutai, Shanxi province, is a historical, cultural relic under national protection, in the village of Foguang, 30 kilometers from Wutai county. It has a long history and precious number of Buddhist so it is called the "Light of Asian Buddhism". The main Grand Eastern Hall was built in the 11th year of the Dazhong period of the Tang Dynasty (857 AD) and ranks only second to the main hall of Nanchan Temple in Wutai county, built in the 3rd year of the Jianzhong period of the Tang (782 AD) among wooden Chinese buildings.

Its architecture, sculptures, murals and Tang inscriptions are valuable and are considered four unique pieces. the temple is on a slope facing west, with mountains to the east, south and north. The architect Liang Sicheng has referred to it as China’s No.1 Treasure, something that it affirmed by Japanese scholars, since there are no other wooden structures from the Tang in China.
