The first Sculpture Projects Ping Yao (SPPY), an international sculpture festival held in Pingyao between July 20 and Aug 20, is showcasing the current strength of freehand Chinese sculpture art to visitors from around the world.

In artistic creation, the visual form created through freehand sculpture art can really bring an image to life, thanks to its three-dimensional form. The sculptor can enjoy a freedom unknown to a painter restricted to working with just a canvas.

This is the theme throughout the Chinese section of the exhibition at SPPY. Chinese artists, including world-renowned names and young sculptors just starting their careers, have all worked to integrate the spirit of freehand sculpture into their work, creating new forms and exciting new visual angles to express their interpretations and ideas about China’s traditional culture and the world that we live in.
