Shangdang Bayinhui Music

Updated: 2018-08-22

Shangdong bayinhui originated during the Yuan and Ming dynasties and became popular in the period between the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty. Bayinhui musicians are all amateurs who have never received formal music training. As a result, their repertoires are comprised of only country tunes and local operas. They don't care much about procedures and rituals either. Not having many opportunities to perform publicly, they get together in their spare time. Sometimes, the bayinhui music group from one village will compete with the group from a neighboring village. The result of the competition is less important than the chance to play music.

Shangdang bayinhui music was banned during the "cultural revolution" (1966-76), but has experienced a revival since the 1980s. In recent years, some of the older musicians have died, it is possible that the tradition of bayinhui music will fade away.
