A 6.6-meter-tall bronze statue of Guan Yu in Shanxi's Yuncheng was transferred to Hong Kong on June 13 in preparations for a commemoration of the great ancient general.

Sun Xufeng, vice-chairman of Hong Kong Shanxi Chamber of Commerce, officiated at the transfer ceremony.

Guan Yu, often referred to as Guan Gong, was a general of the late Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-220). He is seen as the epitome of loyalty and righteousness, as well as a patron saint of wealth. The worshipping of Guan Yu is intended to show respect for moral principles, loyalty, righteousness and courage.

The commemoration events for Guan Yu are to be held from June 22 to 25. It will be the first time Hong Kong has hosted them and will be done to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, as well as to inherit Guan Yu's spirit and promote tourism in Shanxi.
