Lyuliang in Shanxi province held an event targeted at sanitation workers on March 4, China's "Learn from Lei Feng Day".

The event, held in Linxian county, was in honor of Lei Feng (1940-1962), a young soldier of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), to promote his selfless dedication to helping others in trouble.

Volunteers from Dream and Love Public Welfare Association in Lyuliang city delivered more than 1,300 pairs of gloves and 1,600 gauze masks to sanitation workers at the scene. Two hairdressers from the public welfare association provided the cleaners with complimentary haircuts.

"I'm happy so many people care for us and show respect for our work and I will continue to do my bit to improve the city's environment," said Liu Xiulin, a sanitation worker who starts work at 4 am every day.

The volunteers also cleaned Citizen Square and the streets nearby, giving out dustbins and biodegradable plastic bags to passing vehicles.

"We call on more residents to care for sanitation workers and consciously protect the environment of the city," said Feng Zhigang, vice-director of Dream and Love Public Welfare Association.

Some 80 volunteers and 60 sanitation workers took part in the event.
