A production unit from China Central Television (CCTV) has recently toured Pingyao county to collect materials for its Intangible Cultural Heritage China Trip, a program on the protection of intangible cultural heritage in China.

Two local traditional crafts, namely Pingyao polished lacquer ware and the process of producing Pingyao beef, were recorded on camera. The documentary will be broadcast on the Old Story Channel of CCTV at the beginning of 2017.

Pingyao polished lacquer ware originated in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) and won great popularity during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) as its production techniques were increasingly advanced and Shanxi merchants promoted it as far away as Europe. In 2006, it was included on the list of national intangible cultural heritages.

Pingyao beef, which has been popular since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), is famous for its rosy color and tender taste. Its traditional processing techniques were recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
