Journalists from 59 major online media agencies have been touring Shanxi province this week in a bid to change the public's perceptions of the traditionally industrial region in North China.

Shanxi's government is hosting the "National Network Press Shanxi Tour", which runs from Sept 21 to 27 and involves reporters from websites including Xinhuanet, China Daily and ifeng.com.

During the seven-day tour, the journalists have explored Taiyuan, Lvliang, Jinzhong and Yangquan, concentrating on local tourism, economic reform and cultural development. The reporters have shared their experiences through a stream of articles, photos and videos distributed through online platforms.

The itinerary also comprises visits to tourist attractions and cultural festivals such as Qikou Ancient Town and Pingyao International Photography Festival, and interviews with Shanxi-based companies like Jinneng Clean Energy Co.

Shanxi province has accelerated efforts to transform its economy, culture and environmental protection in recent years. The local economy is currently booming as a result, with the province's GDP reaching 571.4 billion yuan ($85.69 billion) in the first half of 2016.

"We hope that all the journalists will experience the charm of Shanxi province and help us improve the image of Shanxi to the rest of the world through this event," said Zhu Xincai, vice-director of Shanxi cyberspace administration.
