Online shopping consumption increased 39 percent to 27 yuan ($4.35) per capita in the first quarter in Shanxi province, according to the sampling survey carried by the National Bureau of Statistics' Shanxi Survey Organization.

The survey showed that the Shanxi urban residents spent 47.1 yuan per capita through online shopping, increasing 29.8 percent over the first three months in 2014.

"Online shopping in rural areas marked dramatic growth in the first quarter," said an officer from Shanxi Survey Organization.

Thanks to optimized infrastructure and the popularity of the Internet, online shopping consumption of rural residents rose 117.3 percent to 5.7 yuan per capita in the first three months.

As computers become common in rural areas, online shopping is expected to become a new trend in these areas.
