The Old Town of Lijiang celebrates being listed as a world heritage site

A commemorating event was held in Lijiang to celebrate it being listed as a world heritage site on Dec 4.

From Dec 1 to 4, major local media gave intensive publicity to the importance of heritage protection. They also established a booth to answer enquiries about residence renovation, antiques protection and knowledge of heritage issues.

Nearly 200 people volunteered to serve at the event. They included university students, business owners and local residents. They hope to promote the spirit of devotion, friendship and mutual help.

The volunteers handed out brochures on the protection of the old town and its renovation, as well as on environmental protection and cultural relics’ conservation.

Yang Guoqing, head of the Lijiang Culture Research Society and the Naxi Culture Research Society, gave a lecture on protecting the Old Town of Lijiang.

At the event, series regulations and policies such as the protection law of the Old Town of Lijiang were publicized to promote awareness of ancient town protection.

Dec 4 was designated as Lijiang’s World Heritage Day in August 2005 and has been observed every year for 11 years in a row. This year, the activity aims to enhance public awareness of the need to protect world heritage sites and promote the rule of law.
