The urban area of Lijiang is as modern as other cities, but the scenery in the old town is more beautiful and amazing, displaying the area’s unique appeal and charm.
The major ethnic group in Lijiang is the Naxi, who have been living here for a long time. Many small Naxi-style shops can be found along the streets in Lijiang, selling silver ornaments, yak bone chopsticks, and medicine from the surrounding mountains. Visitors can stop at a creek crossing in the old town if they feel tired. The clean water in the creek comes from the melting snow on the Yulong Snow Mountains.
Enjoying Naxi music in the evening is always a good choice. The ancient music was handed down by Naxi ancestors and was almost lost because of social change. It has been recollected after the implementation of the opening-up policy. Unfortunately, most musicians nowadays are senior citizens; young people show little interest in the ancient music.
Nighttime in Lijiang is quiet and relaxing. Lanterns on the street and lotus lamps on the creek make the night lively. Visitors can try out a teahouse, read books or write in their journal. It is a good way to escape from the noisy world and enjoy silence and peace.
