On the second day of the first lunar month each year, the Naxi people (a minority ethnic group in Yunnan province) have a traditional custom of celebrating the Stick Festival. People take different kinds of wooden farm tools to the trade market for business. This includes hencoops, ploughs, buckets and hoes, among other items. Many of these farm tools are made out of wood and sticks and is why the day for trading is called the "Stick Festival".
After the Stick Festival, the spring plough starts. Thus, the festival is actually a trade fair for the preparation of spring plough.
