Suzhou gears up public transport construction in 2016

Suzhou New District will have three tram lines in 2020. The second phase of the Middle Ring Road is on the drawing board. The 358km extension will link downtown Suzhou with its Wujiang district and Kunshan city.

According to the Suzhou government work report, many public transport projects will be under construction this year. Changshu-Jiaxing Expressway will be built this year with three lanes each way and a speed limit of 120 km/h. Work will start on two tunnels across the Taihu Lake while the Yuyang Hill Tunnel in the Taihu Lake National Tourism Resort will be put to use toward the end of the year.

The city also conducted an environmental impact assessment for Metro Line 6, Line 7, Line 8 and Line S1. They will total 148.5km long and have 111 stations. Line 2 extension will go into operation in the second half of this year.

Plans are also made to launch 50 mini-bus routes in the next two to three years and purchase 350 electric buses this year, more than half of new buses budgeted this year. Suzhou is upgrading its bus network and will have at least one bus stop with a 500-meter diameter.

Tram Line 2 is expected to go into service early next year in Suzhou New District. By 2020, the tram system in the district will total 45.7km in distance.
