In 2014, nearly 300 domestic and overseas movies hit cinemas in Kunshan city, Jiangsu province, generating more than 100 million yuan ($16.23 million) at the box office, a record high.
In Dec 2014, the release of The Crossing by John Woo, Gone with the Bullets by Jiang Wen, and The Taking of Tiger Mountain 3D by Hark Tsui contributed to the strong growth of Kunshan's box office.
Kunshan currently has 11 cinemas with a total of 9,058 seats and 64 film screens, which comfortably meets the demand of movie-goers. The introduction of high-end film facilities such as IMAX screens and 4D movies also added clout to the cinemas. Chen Juan, a staff member of the Xiyuan Cinema, said that the cinema saw a 25 percent growth in box office takings last year thanks to the high-tech screening facilities.
In addition to releasing more movies, the cinemas have also cooperated with banks and group-buying websites to attract more movie fans through discounted ticket offers.
Kunshan has enjoyed an average of 40 percent annual growth in box office takings in recent years, which helped rank it the first among the county-level cities in Jiangsu for many years.
In 2015, Kunshan will open four new cinemas in Lujia town, Qiandeng town, Golden Eagle shopping mall and Changcheng international square, a commercial complex.
