Introduction to Yao Jianping’s embroidery art

Yao Jianping, born in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, is a Suzhou Embroidery artist, researcher, successor of the national intangible cultural heritage (Suzhou Embroidery), member of the 8th Committee of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC), national “March 8th”Red-Banner Pacesetter, one of the Top 10 Artisans in China, women’s model of the national study and performance contest, “master of Folk Arts and Crafts” awarded by the UNESCO, director of the Council of the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Society, vice chairman of Chinese Folk Literature and Art Society of Jiangsu province.

She is one of the senior talents in Jiangsu province, visiting scholar at Peking University and Stuttgart Institute of Germany on the governmental sponsorship, and the first embroidery artist to hold an individual exhibition in the Shanghai Art Museum – a national art gallery. The Party and state leaders, including President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and former premier Zhu Rongji, have greeted her.

Ms. Yao established the Suzhou Zhenhu Embroidery Research Institute in 1998 and Embroidery Art Gallery of Yao Jianping in 2002. She won four gold medals of Shanhua Awards, the highest honor for folk arts of China, and over 10 international awards. Her works were carried to outer space on a satellite twice before.

Her master works, I Love China, is the first embroidery to get carried by a satellite. Her works had been shown to many foreign dignitaries and celebrities, which have been collected by important institutions and individuals at home and abroad.

She has also embroidered portraits of Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Kofi Annan, George Bush, Queen Elizabeth, Jacques Chirac and other dignitaries. In October 2011, two master embroidery works, Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains and Century Peace – Hundred Doves, were marketed in the Tianjin Cultural Artwork Exchange.

The Embroidery Art Gallery of Yao Jianping was granted as a Recommended International Tourist Destination in 2004, Folk Arts Exhibition Base of Jiangsu Province in 2005, National Cultural Industry Demonstration Base in 2006, and Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Demonstration Base in 2007.

In 2009, the Embroidery Arts of Yao Jianping was awarded as a well-known brand and brand-name product of Jiangsu Province.

She has held embroidery exhibitions in Singapore, Australia, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, South Korea and New Zealand.

In 2009, she attended the first cross-Straits exhibition - Roots and Soul – Intangible Chinese Cultural Heritage Exhibition - held at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taiwan as a representative successor of intangible heritage (Suzhou Embroidery).
