Taohuawu’s New Year Wood-Block Painting Exhibition goes on display in Kunshan

Hosted by the Suzhou Municipal Public Center, Suzhou Cultural Center and Taohuawu New Year Wood-Block Painting Museum in Suzhou and co-organized by the Kunshan Cultural Center, the 2014 Suzhou Taohuawu’s New Year Wood-Block Painting Traveling Exhibition went on display in the Kunshan Cultural Center recently.

Originating from the block printing process of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Taohuawu New Year wood-painting evolved from embroidered portraits. The New Year paintings featured colorful themes and were engraved on woodblocks painted with watercolors to print onto paper.

Taohuawu New Year wood-block painting is one of three famous kinds of wood-engraved New Year paintings in China. The process was included on the first batch of the national intangible cultural heritage list released by the State Council in 2006.
