The 2014 China Academy Awards of Documentary Film (CAADF) was held in the Communication University of China in Beijing on Dec 26. Director Bill Do from the Binhu district of Wuxi, Jiangsu province, won an award for "Best Student Works" with his documentary film, Beijing or Not.

Bill Do, with Du Yichao as his Chinese name, graduated with a radio, television and directing major from the School of Journalism and Communication at Communication University of China. He upholds the principle that arts originate from life, visiting a total of 67 cities to collect writing subjects.

The 66-minute film records the living conditions of "Beipiao", a neologism referring to those without a Beijing registered residence and struggling to make their fortunes in Beijing. He shot the intriguing film with skilled photographic technique, winning much attention and appreciation from the mass audience.

Since 2010, he uploaded many original works online with a number of them with hits up to 100 million by the end of 2014. His work, Beijing or Not, won the Vision Youth Best Annual Film Award in the Beijing International College Film Festival on June 6, 2014.

Du also showed his talent in music creation. He produced the first national pop song in Wu dialect in 2014 and called on several dozen post-90s to volunteer to shoot a MV in Wu dialect, "Naue", inspiring a large number of people to learn the dialect.

The CAADF was first held in 2011 and sponsored by the Communication University of China. The annual event invites international evaluation experts to honor the academic character and international perspective of film in 13 categories.

It involves those working in all aspects of the documentary industry in China and worldwide. It has earned global respect from domestic and foreign documentary experts and scholars around the world.
