Media tour brings shantytown renovation back into the limelight

A new residential community for previous residents of Beiliang, pictured on July 18. The community can host 11,690 residents, and has brand new activity centers, clinics and expanded schools. A delegation consisting of more than 80 journalists from 31 provinces and municipalities started a media tour in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region on July 11. The journalists tour Beiliang in Baotou on July 18. Once the largest shantytown area in China, Beiliang initiated the renovation project in 2013 and completed it with great success. Beiliang used to house a shantytown area of roughly 13 square kilometers, hosting some 124,000 residents. [Photo/news.china.com.cn]
