Former Party secretary of Anyang city in central China's Henan province stood trial for corruption charges on Tuesday, Xinhua reported on Sept 16.

Zhang Xiaodong, the defendant, was accused of taking bribes worth more than 21 million yuan ($3.4 million) in exchange for seeking favors in construction projects and post assignments.

Zhang served as Party secretary of Anyang until April 2013, when he was investigated by Henan provincial discipline authorities.

The prosecutors presented evidence of Zhang's involvement in 36 corruption cases to Zhumadian city Intermediate People's Court.

The defendant was represented by counsel during the trial.

Zhang expressed his regret for the corruption and pledged to renew himself.

The court has not announced a verdict yet.
