Nandan county is located in the northeast of Hechi city. Covering an area of 3,916 square kilometers, it was home to 327,168 people in 2019.

Nandan has abundant non-ferrous mineral and hydro-power resources. Over 20 kinds of nonferrous metals such as tin, lead, zinc, silver, and manganese have been mined in the county. Among the metals, there are thought to be 1.44 million tons of un-mined tin, giving the county the highest tin reserves in China.

A total of 286 rivers flow through Nandan, including the Hongshui, Laping and Qingshui rivers, providing a hydropower generation capacity of 244,000 kilowatts.

The county is also well known for its tourist attractions. Geyasigu Scenic Area, a great place to experience the customs of the Yao ethnic minority, and Dongtian Jiuhai Scenic Spot, which features a karst cave used for wine production, are both listed as national 4A-level scenic spots.

Hechi is located in the northwestern part of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and the southern foothills of the Yungui Plateau.
