The new waterworks of Mazhang district, which began operations on Dec 28, is capable of supplying 75,000 cubic meters of water per day for important industrial projects and local residents.

The former waterworks supplied water to more than 6,000 households as well as a large number of factories and schools in the area. Offering 25,000 tons of water daily, it was far from satisfying the needs.

In February 2010, Zhanjiang Water Management Investment Group took over the waterworks. It soon put its hand to reconstructing the plant and renovating the old water supply pipe network.

In line with the Specialized Plan of Zhanjiang on Water Supply (2005-2020), work on the construction of a new waterworks began that year, with the purpose of addressing the water supply shortage once and for all and propelling local economic development.

Located to the east of Heliu Reservoir, the newly-built waterworks covers 34,905 square meters. Costing 128 million yuan ($20 million), it now serves 13 villages, industrial parks, colleges and hospitals in the district and neighboring area.

Furthermore, the waterworks is able to extend its service scope to the Chikan district and Zhanjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone during peak times.
