Chen Xiaohua: pre-employment training in urgent need for tour guides

Updated: 2016-03-14

The quality of tour guides needs to be improved to provide better services for tourists, according to Chen Xiaohua, an official from the environmental management office of Zhanjiang's Chikan district, Guangdong province.

Chen voiced his view after hearing the Government Work Report on March 5, as the fourth session of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC) began in Beijing. He is also one of Zhanjiang's deputies at the annual legislative session.

The report delivered by Premier Li Keqiang on March 5 called for the strengthening of infrastructure for transportation, tourist attractions and self-driving camps, as well as more regulations on the tourism market.

Chen said that he would like to propose for the government to open more pre-employment training courses for tour guides and to improve their salaries to help extend their serving period.

"We will have a wider market for tourism after entering the mass tourism era. This means we need to regulate the market further through training courses for tour guides," said Chen.

Chen stressed that English should be an important skill for tour guides as the language will help them communicate with international tourists and improve the city's image.
