THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

MESSAGE ON THE LAUNCH OF CHINA’S CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND DEVELOPMENT (CIKD)

Beijing, 21 August 2017

To be delivered by Mr. Jorge Chediek, Secretary-General’s Envoy
for South-South Cooperation

I extend my sincere congratulations to you and the people of China on the official launching of the Center for International Knowledge on Development, and China’s Report on Progress in the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Both these achievements demonstrate the great efforts and strong commitments made by the Government of China to achieving sustainable development within China and globally.

China has been a true leader in promoting South-South cooperation for development. The “Belt and Road Initiative”, which aims to deepen connectivity in infrastructure, trade, finance, policies, and among peoples across countries and regions, reaffirms China’s commitment to the world in joining hands to support peace and prosperity.

The Center for International Knowledge on Development, announced by His Excellency President Xi Jinping at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 26 September 2015, aims to support research, develop and exchange knowledge for sustainable development globally.

I am pleased to learn that the Center has already been working in partnership with several UN entities in advancing knowledge sharing.

I would also like to take this opportunity to highlight the proposed agreement between the Center for International Knowledge on Development and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, under the South-South Global Thinkers initiative. I am confident that this partnership will support greater exchange of experiences and the advancement of thought leadership in South-South and triangular cooperation.

I highly appreciate the support of the Government of China for the work of the United Nations. The United Nations remains committed to working closely with China, and continues to count on China as a most important partner for peace and development.

Thank you.
