2015-11-18

Li Wei, Development Research Center of the State Council

The China-UK Development Forum jointly held in London by the Development Research Center of the State Council of China and the Department for International Development of UK is of crucial significance. With changes in the development level, development environment, development conditions, and social demands on development, people's understanding of the denotations and connotations of development keeps changing as well. The "New Development Agenda" embodies the wisdom of experts and statesmen from various nations over years. Compared with the "Millennium Development Goals", three basic elements are added to the connotations of "New Development Agenda", namely health, equality, and dignity. China has made great contributions to sustained global growth including the following aspects: First, China has made major contribution to global economic and trade growth; Second, China has contributed greatly to lifting mankind out of poverty; Third, China has offered development experience for developing countries as reference to lift themselves out of poverty and become rich. In face of new conditions, new challenges and new social demands, China is qualified and has confidence to realize sustained socio-economic growth. Efforts should focus on promoting sustained development in the following aspects: 1. Maintain economic growth at a medium-high speed; 2. Enhance the quality of labor force in general; 3. Push ahead with social equality by improving the income distribution system; 4. Establish sustained consumption and production modes. In implementing the "New Development Agenda" issued by the United Nations, China will enhance closer cooperation, which is mainly reflected in mutually open markets among various nations. In the course of optimizing the global economic governance pattern, more considerations should be given to developing countries to enable them to gain a bigger say. Efforts should also be made to jointly create opportunities for cooperation and development. Besides, knowledge of development should be shared among various countries.
