Professionals with key skills are essential to a region’s development, and regions should provide the right mix of preferential policies to attract them, argued Yang Zhenbin, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Party secretary of Jilin University.

The university has taken a number of measures to ensure that its best and brightest graduates stay in Jilin for work, and now more than 2,500 graduates choose to work in the province each year, said Yang.

There is no doubt that these graduates have made an enormous contribution to Jilin’s economy, he added.

The university is currently establishing a research institute to investigate the development of Northeast China, and it is expected that by the year 2046, which marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the university, Jilin University will have developed into a world-class education provider, said Yang.

In addition, the CPPCC member will submit his proposals during the two sessions, requesting more attention and support for university students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including for orphans and students with disabilities.
