The style and condition of your hair can knock 10 years off your appearance. Follow our tips and tricks on how to wear your hair to give you a more youthful appearance.

Colouring and covering grey hair
Colour can be one of the best ways to make you look younger.

Which colour to chose
One shade lighter than your skin tone will warm up your complexion.

DON'T: go too dark as your hair colour can look too harsh.
DON'T: go too light as it can look trashy.

Home colouring
Colouring your hair at home can be a great option but ONLY if you want to add richness to your natural shade. If you're wanting to change your colour always go to the hairdressers and have it done professionally.

Covering grey
If you're more than 50% grey consult your hairdresser who will be able to help you select shades which not only suit your complexion but also your hair condition and style.

If you want to completely cover grey hair you will need to use a permanent colour but make sure that the one you pick is no more than two shades darker than your natural colour. Permanent colour tends to improve the condition of hair making it shiny and thicker. Your roots will need to be done every six weeks.

Often skin tone becomes lighter with age and your hair colouring will need to become warmer to suit. Honey or beige colours will suit people whose natural hair colour is blonde whilst chestnut or auburn will look better on people with dark hair.

Highlights are a good option
Highlights will give your hair a natural lift and can brighten grey hair without covering it completely. Highlighting helps the grey hairs to blend in less noticeably with the rest of your hair.

Semi-permanent colour
Semi-permanent colours are vegetable-based and will fade with every wash, most will last around 12 washes. You can't lighten hair with semi-permanent colour but it can be a great option for going darker or adding a warmer shade to your hair.

Wearing your hair long
Hair gets finer with age which means long hair can tend to look limp and lifeless.
Only wear your hair long if it's in great condition and have it well cut to fall around your face.

A light fringe is more flattering than pulling your hair back from your forehead. If you're not happy with your jawline try softer, longer sides to disguise it.

Short hair
A shorter style can be very flattering, especially if cut to frame your face.

It will:
- add more body to your hair
- enhance your cheekbones
- rejuvenate your look

Remember that a short cut will need to be maintained regularly, probably cut every 6-8 weeks.

Fringe benefits?
A fringe can make you look younger and give your face more definition.

It will cover any frown lines and even crows-feet if you go for the long fringe.

Top hairdressers recommend a wispy side-fringe reaching just below the brow to frame and flatter your face.
