Lisu New Year (Kuo Shi) of Nujiang

Date: December 20, 2009 (5th of the eleventh month by lunar calendar)

Venue: Liuku Town, Lushui County and Shangpa Town, Fugong County, Nujiang Prefecture, etc.

The Lisus’ New Year, “Kuo Shi” in the Lisu ethnic language, is the traditional festival of Lisus in Nujiang known as “the Ethnic Minority in Ggorge” and “the Ethnic Minority on Mountain”. During the festival at Liuku, capital of Nujiang prefecture, grand performance themed on “Climbing Swords and Stepping on a Sea of Flames” and “Spring Bathing in the Open Air” will be held every year. The Lisu inhabitation area in each county will hold festival pray activities for blessings such as Guoliu, crossbow shooting and drinking song singing. The “four-voice” singing by tens thousand of people known as the “living fossil for intermingling of Chinese and western culture” is the greatest highlight on the festival.
