Updated: 2009-02-13 11:42 “Supporting social and environmental projects is the obligation of any responsible business.” These are the words of Daniel Swarovski, founder of the company bearing his name and who set the pace in 1895 for a commitment that has never faltered. As the company greatly benefits from, and is dependent on many different resources from nature, Daniel Swarovski I believed in “reinvesting” in nature long before sustainable resource use had become one of society’s general concerns. The Annual Editions the Swarovski Crystal Society (SCS) creates each year exclusively for its thousands of members illustrate this involvement in a very concrete way. Launched in 2008, the current trilogy, “Endangered Wildlife” is dedicated to endangered species. After highlighting the panda and the Yangtze River, the 2009 edition features the gorilla and Africa. SCS members who choose to buy this Annual Edition will satisfy their passion for the poetry of Swarovski cut crystal while supporting a project to invest in sustainable water management at the source of the Nile. GORILLA TRIBUTE IN 2009 The 2009 Annual Edition is composed of a mother gorilla and her young one which, thanks to Swarovski’s know-how, are portrayed in truer-than-life fashion. The animal’s poses and movements have been carefully studied so as to impart expression and authenticity to their portrayal in crystal. Purity and precision of detail fuse to give emotional life to the gorillas and imbue these jewel-like figurines with sparkling reflections. The mother gorilla and her young one have been created in Black Diamond faceted crystal, and their eyes are made from Jet crystal. Swarovski also offers a rhodium-plated bracelet which is accessorised with two charms: one in the form of a gorilla, in ruthenium plate and Black Diamond crystal; the other in the form of a banana leaf, in ruthenium plate, Emerald crystal and Light Peridot crystal. A grey cotton cord is supplied to wear the charms as a pendant. Sizes: Adult Gorilla: 10.5cm x 11cm / Gorilla cub: 5.5cm x 4.3cm Swarovski Crystal Society (SCS) Founded by Swarovski in 1987, the SCS is the world’s largest collectors society. The SCS unites 370 000 individuals from 130 countries that admire the beauty of crystal, quality craftsmanship and creative design. The SCS membership opens doors to the fascinating world of crystal with a range of events, tours and other opportunities to meet fellow crystal enthusiasts. Members of the SCS receive a quarterly Swarovski Magazine and have their own area on the Swarovski website.
113 years ago, in 1895, Daniel Swarovski I, a Bohemian inventor and visionary, moved to the village of Wattens, Tyrol in Austria, with his newly-invented machine for cutting and polishing crystal jewellery stones. From these beginnings, which revolutionised the fashion world, Swarovski has grown to be the world’s leading producer of precision-cut crystal, for fashion, jewellery and more recently lighting, architecture and interiors. Today, the company, still based in Wattens, family-owned and run by 4th and 5th generation family members, has a global reach, with some 22.000 employees, a presence in over 120 countries and a turnover in 2007 of 2.56 billion Euros. Swarovski comprises two major divisions, one producing and selling loose crystals to the industry and the other creating design-driven finished products. Swarovski crystal components, known by their product brand names CRYSTALLIZED™ – Swarovski Elements for fashion and STRASS® Swarovski® Crystal for architecture and light, have become an essential ingredient of international design. Showing the creativity that lies at the heart of the company, Swarovski’s own-brand lines of accessories, jewellery and home décor are sold through more than 1150 Swarovski stores and concessions in all major fashion capitals, while the exclusive Daniel Swarovski accessories collection has become the company’s Couture signature. The Swarovski Crystal Society has close to 400,000 members worldwide, keen collectors of the celebrated crystal figurines. And in Wattens, Crystal Worlds, the multi-media crystal museum, has attracted over 7 million visitors since it was opened in 1995, as a celebration of Swarovski’s universe of innovation and inspiration, of crystal as the ultimate creative material. The Swarovski corporation also includes four industrial brands, Tyrolit®, manufacturing grinding tools, Swareflex, for road safety reflectors, Optik, producing precision optical instruments and Signity, Swarovski’s brand for genuine and created gemstones. |
